Tabs and accordions are used in several places on this site to condense information into a smaller visible space and to keep you from having to read something you've already read after you've visited a page a few times.
Accordions hide information but keep it accessible if you need it.

Below you see three tabs named FIRST, SECOND, and THIRD. Click on them and see what happens.
First
Tabs hide information in groups that are usually related. Think of file folders that have tabs with subjects written on them. You pull it out when you find the one you're looking for.
Second
When you click on this tab, the information inside the First and Third is hidden.
Third
Tabs make including related information relevant to a topic close at hand and easy to find without taking up a lot of space on the page.
